Having just returned from a road trip, I wanted to take the opportunity to share a little story as many cottage-goers and long-weekenders get ready for Labour Day.
A few weeks ago, I took a weekend trip to Muskoka cottage country – and got first-hand insight as to how run-flat tires can make life incredibly more convenient. Driving past Bala, my TPM started going off – which instantly sends a wave of panic through your stomach. It was late at night, I couldn’t see any damage, but luckily the car was able to drive well – so we made it back in one piece. The next day, I was able to drive back in to the dealership, and when my car was put on a hoist – the discovery of two tire punctures made me cringe.
The Endras BMW technician took the time to explain the structure of a run-flat tire’s strengthened side wall, and how this allows you to keep driving for somewhere around 250kms! He pulled a nail out of one tire about an inch and a half long that penetrated through-and-through, which would have otherwise caused a nasty burst.
Although there is some debate of whether to get run-flats, I was particularly thankful to have them on this occasion. Didn’t need a tow truck or to carry a spare, and definitely did not lose control of the vehicle because of a sudden burst. Although when a run-flat is sufficiently punctured, you do need to get a new tire…for me, it was worth the inconvenience of potentially being stranded at the side of the forest in the middle of the night. Paired with nitrogen inflation, BMW makes it really easy to reduce the chances of uneven tire wear and pressure (which can lead to weakening and potential accidents).
So as you get ready to take your next trip, make sure your tire pressure is checked and adequate. You might also want to consider picking up an after-market rim and tire warranty through our Business Office (I know I’ll definitely look in to getting this from the start when purchasing my next vehicle). Especially if I make cottaging my hobby of choice.
Here are some important numbers to jot down and keep in your glove compartment juuuuust in case:

Happy cruisin’!
