From new car launches to concept car teasers and from new engine designs to motorsport victories, 2011 has made its grand entrance into the history books as “BMW’s Year”. The concept cars were sublime, the model premieres stunned the world, and the new engine designs revolutionized the industry and won championships. For your convenience and entertainment, we’ve listed the most noteworthy 2011 milestones below in short form.
BMW 1M: Initially the recipient of severe scepticism amongst M die-hards, the only people who now wouldn’t rob a bank to own a 1M are those who haven’t had the pleasure of driving one.
BMW M5: The first ever M5 to be powered by a set of turbochargers was mostly seen sideways as it drifted its way to internet stardom. BMW overcame the challenge of one-upping the E60 M5 F1 derived V10 engine by making the new TwinPower Turbo a torquier, more responsive, and less thirsty driver’s power tool. Continuing with tradition, the new M5 is an undercover super car that looks equally at home racing on the track as it does arriving at a five star hotel’s valet park. It’s the ultimate saloon car.
BMW 1 Series: Even though the F20 1 Series didn’t make it to North America, we’ll keep a close eye on its upcoming Coupe variant since we couldn’t get enough of the supremely balanced and driver oriented 135i Coupe.
BMW 3 Series: Introduced in 2011 and on the road in 2012, what you need to know about the new F30 3 Series is that it’s wider and lower than the outgoing 3 Series, that its price has nearly stayed the same even though it’s now loaded to the brim with luxury features that are now standard, and that it comes standard with a drive mode rocker switch that toggles through four settings: Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport-plus. Keeping in mind that the outgoing E92 M3 is still considered the industry benchmark as it continues to crush anything that gets thrown at it, whether on the road or on the track in various GT championships, we’re absolutely confident that the new 3 Series will rock our socks.
BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe: Late in 2011 BMW managed to squeeze in another premiere, this time a four-door coupe that competes directly with Porsche’s Panamera, Mercedes’ CLS, and Audi’s A7. The Gran Coupe will receive the full M treatment in the not so distant future and is said to become BMW M’s flagship with an engine that’ll outpower the current 560bhp twin-scroll twin-turbo V8 that powers the F10 M5.
Throughout 2011 BMW also found the opportunity to launch the jaw dropping beautiful 328 Hommage Concept, the Efficient Dynamics i3 and i8 Hybrid City and Sports cars, the Vision ConnectedDrive that showcases BMW’s latest safety and infotainment systems, and the efficient and torquey N20 4-cylinder turbo that has stunned critics with its smoothness and performance similar to that of the outgoing in-line 6-cylinder engines.
BMW’s offspring also enjoyed a successful 2011 as MINI crushed the rally stages around the world in their JCW Countryman WRC and later in the year introduced the sizzling MINI Coupe. BMW Motorrad won victories all over the world with their record breaking S1000RR superbike and showed off with an all-new touring 6-cylinder K1600GT(L) that set the new touring-class benchmark.
While we couldn’t possibly fit in all of BMW’s accomplishments of 2011, let us know in the comments section below which noteworthy events we have overlooked.
